Nordic West Office Launches New Global Scenarios Project

Will there be a new cold war? Global recession? Energy crisis? Food crisis? What will happen in Ukraine? Taiwan? Will we see the recovery of the global economy or one crisis after another?

To answer these questions, Nordic West Office launches new global scenarios. Scenarios help companies, organisations and societies to prepare for the future, and stress test their strategies. The premise of the new project was presented at our kick off event on 24 August by Nordic West Office (NWO) CEO Risto E.J. Penttilä.

In the event, global experts from the NWO network Dr. Rebecca Grant and Prof. Rana Mitter joined via video link to discuss current issues in the United States and China.

Questions raised included what will happen in the US midterm elections and party congress in China; will there be a war in Taiwan; should we be optimistic or pessimistic about the future of these nations?

The US midterm elections are two months away: Grant predicts a very close race. While the tensions are Taiwan have certainly grown, Grant and Mitter both saw a conflict in Taiwan in the next few years unlikely.

In the following panel discussion former prime minister Esko Aho, Varma CEO Risto Murto and CapMan Byuout managing partner Pia Kåll discussed what the current geopolitical environment and power struggle mean for Finland and Europe.

We will elaborate on these issues and more during our scenarios project, in which Nordic West Office will bring together Nordic companies to develop Global Scenarios to describe plausible futures.
